A 40-foot poplar tree fell and crushed two cars near the Trolley Square area of the city this morning.
No one was injured, according to city officials.
Capt. Michael R. Schaal of the Wilmington Fire Department reported that city crews received a call of a tree down, blocking Lovering Ave., between Rodney and Broom streets, around 8 a.m.
The city's Parks Department was dispatched to scene and had the road re-opened by about noon, said John Rago, communications director for Mayor James Baker.
Schaal said they did not know why the tree fell.
It appeared healthy and there was no obvious explanation.
Rago said crews will return to the scene Monday to complete the clean-up.
